Obviously we cannot say much more without actually getting hold of the cameras. The reviews that I have seen seem to be more positive about the Canon, perhaps this is more down to the length of time the reviewers have had with the Canon system. In some cases, much longer. Where the Nikon Z’s were only with reviewers a short time. Perhaps not enough for people to get used to what they where using.

There was also a lot of hype around the Nikon Z, so it could be that they were just never going to live up to the expectations of the reviewers. That and a couple of fairly ordinary kit lenses at release, and the strange decision on the batter grip and you have enough to tip the balance for Canon?

Mamiya 645 45mm Lens

June 10, 2018

I took a punt on a Mamiya 645 45mm wide angle lens on ebay. It was listed as having fungus, but I bought it anyway because I knew that I could get it cleaned up by GR Enterprise Services as they had fixed some of my other medium format camera parts in the past. They did a good job. The lens is really well cleaned up and in good working order.

Total Rebuild!

April 29, 2018

Goodbye Squarespace. Nothing against it but as I am running a server anyway for other websites I decided to move my website onto that, buy a half decent theme and off we go. This also avoids the situation I was in paying international fees. So here we are, on WordPress. I actually liked some of the old layout I had so I decided to stick close to it, but using the features of the photography theme.

So far all good. I need to change the logo from their’s to something else. There are probably some other tweaks that could be made I am sure.

eBay Finds!

February 3, 2018

I have been searching eBay for infrared film. I am very excited that I managed to pick up 6 rolls of Kodak HIE bw infrared. This is a great film, that produces some really interesting effects with a red or infrared filter. Its old, and out of date, but I think it will be ok. I have been using some very old Kodak Colour Infrared film that has worked perfectly.

I might try to get another 6 rolls, its a little expensive but actually not that expensive compared with new film prices. I have one colour film left so the plan is to try to get a couple more as a friend wants me to do some band pictures with it for her.

Rumours
D5s and the D850

November 26, 2017

There are rumours surfacing about the D5s, possible release sometime in Jan 2018? Perhaps not, although there have been rumours there is very little. I am slowly saving up for my next camera, I could do with another body now that I sold the D90. Just in case something breaks. I assumed that I would get the D850, and this remains the most likely candidate. However, once you add the battery grip, the spare battery, and the charger for that battery then you are approaching D5 price. If the assumption that the D5s will have more megapixels and perhaps be a similar price to the D5 proves true then this might be a better option.

Printing in the Darkroom!

October 26, 2017

The darkroom is fully functional! The first pictures printed. It was great getting back into it, took me a while to remember the process and how it all works. I first used the old Durst enlarger that I bought off the internet years ago, it has a colour head so works easily with multigrade paper. It worked well, and with the lens I have can print to about 10×8. I think tried another enlarger that could print much bigger, this one has a filter holder, and I didn’t find the filters straight away. It worked great too. Now I need bigger paper!

Darkroom Update

September 23, 2017

Darkroom is pretty much setup, I tried two of the enlargers that where donated. Including the one I donated that I thought was in need of repair. However after some faffing about I got them both to work. Although I am not entirely sure that the colour adjustment is working for one. I will try to dig up its manual on the web.

The darkroom itself needs a bit more blacking out. There are a couple of light leaks. I do have a lot of ikea blackout material that I can use to sort that out. Just waiting for chemicals really, looking forward to the first session!

Darkroom Progress

September 21, 2017

Steady progress is being made on the darkroom in The Empty Shop Think Tank (TESTT) space. I have a key! That helps. I plan to test the kit on Saturday, and perhaps try to develop some films. That is the plan anyway, I need to get some chemicals. Hoping that Amazon prime might come to the rescue.

Below is a picture of the bench I made out of part of the toilet cubical.

Nikon D850 Sensor is Made by Tower Jazz

September 15, 2017

We finally have some good evidence that the sensor in the Nikon D850 is actually made by a company called Towerjazz and not Sony, as many people thought. This is a company based in Israel, and is 49% own by Panasonic. They have some history for making backside illuminated sensors for scientific purposes, and also they make sensors for Leica. The sensor is designed by Nikon, which doesn’t really mean very much, they designed the components that deliver the light to the sensor. Its not surprising that Nikon do not make the sensors themselves, the infrastructure and expertise required is huge, and if they had that capacity we would know about it.

Interestingly the last Nikon camera with a Panasonic sensor was the Nikon D700. Get a more complete story from Theoria Apophasis and his source on Youtube.

F90 and a Crummy Lens!

September 9, 2017

I have the use of a F90, its in good condition seems to work well. I have been using it for taking Infrared colour pictures. The lens is not good, its the old 28-80mm AF-D. The camera doesn’t seem to get the aperture correct, not sure if that is the lens or the camera. I hope it is the lens as I in tend to get a slightly better lens, maybe an old 35-70 AIS.
